Open Enrollment
We are just over a month out from open enrollment, which is the time of year when many people have the opportunity to sign up for a new health insurance plan. You can renew the coverage you already have or you can switch to a different type of policy. This applies to people who are using the ACA marketplace or HealthCare.gov. This also applies to many people who have a plan sponsored by their employer, or people on government insurance, like Medicare or Medicaid.
As the owner of a direct primary care clinic, I want to remind people that health insurance was never meant to be the way that people pay for all of their health care. It was actually meant to be used for critical events, unexpected events, major injuries, surgeries, things like that but instead it has become this very broken system where we are treating it more like a discount card than an insurance policy.
As a result of using health insurance for every time we have a touch point with the healthcare system, we have seen exponentially increasing premiums and an increase in prices on health care itself.
